While antiterrorism legislation has received much support, threats to civil liberties remain a concern. Floyd Abrams, noted First Amendment attorney and William J. Brennan Jr., visiting professor of First Amendment issues, moderated the third in a series of First Amendment Breakfasts hosted by the Graduate School of Journalism on December 6, 2001. Panelists included Dianne Doctor, news director of WNBC-TV; James Neal, vice president for information services and university librarian; and John Podesta, former White House chief of staff for the Clinton administration.
To kick off the celebration of Columbia University's 250th anniversary, the University hosted a distinguished group of international government leaders, philosophers, and political scientists for this two-day symposium, which considered the pressing question of how to strike the right balance between liberty and security in a post-9/11 world.
