E-Seminar Description
This e-seminar is the first of two in which Professor Paul Johnson explores the rich and dramatic history of the East End of London. Using Spitalfields, a historic corner of the East End, as a window onto the history of social and economic change, you will learn about the great surges of immigration from Ireland, Eastern Europe, and Bangladesh; about the creation, destruction, and re-creation of tightly knit communities; about labor and toil in one of the poorest and most restive districts of London; and consequently about the religious, political, and social fault-lines that divided and defined British society.

You will also visit some of the most historic and atmospheric locations in London: from an immense Victorian match factory, site of the match girls' strike of 1888, to Petticoat Lane market, where East Enders have sold everything from exotic animals to secondhand clothes to their last remaining belongings. Through images, maps, video, eyewitness testimony, and critical examination of original sources, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of one of Britain's legendary areas.

Instructor's Background
Instructor's Background
Paul Johnson is Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has taught at the London School of Economics since 1984 and took up his current post of professor of economic history and convenor of the department in 1999. He has been Visiting Professor at All Souls College, Oxford, and at the Graduate School of Business, Nihon University, Tokyo. Between 1984 and 1999, he was also research fellow for the Centre for Economic Policy Research. Since 1987, he has also been a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research interests include the economics of retirement and old age, pensions policy and British social history since 1850. His publications include Saving and Spending: The Working Class Economy in Britain 1870-1939 and 20th Century Britain: Economic, Social and Cultural Change and Old Age from Antiquity to Post-Modernity. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals and has been a consultant for institutions ranging from the UK National Consumers Council to the World Bank.
